During recent work a new indicator stalk was fitted to solve a headlamp flasher problem.

When the stalk was removed, a plastic piece fell out reassuring us that the replacement stalk was the best solution.

Everything worked: the headlamp flasher, indicators and horn. So far so good.

Two weeks ago during a run, the indicators stopped working. It on one of the hottest days of the year (28c).

I checked the fuses - all good - but when I touched the relay it was almost too hot to remove.

Once it had cooled I replaced it and the indicators worked again.

Since then indicators have been intermittent, even when the relay was replaced with a new one.

Tonight, they've stopped working again.

What should I be looking for?

It started to rain before I started the investigation again but I'll start with:

- switch (new)
- fuses
- relay

What else?

Thanks in advance.

Peter

I'd suspect the new stalk. That's where I'd look first.

Can you reinstall the old stalk temporarily to see if the indicator problem persists?

I know you said the headlamp flasher was the problem with the old stalk but can you live with it whilst you check out your indicator fault?

sounds like you have an earth fault to make the flasher that hot. first are the flasher connections on the loom burnt from getting too hot? then check connections on front slam panel and line fuses behind air filter for corrosion , common failure points. to check for earth remove all indicator bulbs and the flasher unit. put a multimeter on ohms scale to light green and brown flasher unit cable and other end to clean point on car body, should read no connection, then do same with indicators both ways should be same. if you get a reading on any of these you have a short on that circuit.
