Hey guys

Orignal post was reference the front panels. However on poking around I realise I need a new A post, inner Flitch and potentially scuttle end.

I can weld fine but I haven't done this repair before. Any advice is much appreciated. I could go cutting it all out but I wanted to at least leave the check panel in with holes to allow the correct alignment of the door hinges.

I'm thinking:

1. Remove rotten metal around air vents.

2. Weld in inner box panel to lower dash panel and floor

3.weld in check panel whilst bolted to inner flitch to allow holes to be in the right place

4. Cut out around inner flitch panel Then butt weld in the new inner flitch

5. Weld in the final inner A post panel on top.

Note: I've noticed that the inner flitch only goes halfway up so I'll need to make a panel to fit between inner flitch and scuttle closing panel.

Any advice is much appreciated as I don't know where to start really.

Thanks, Luke

I kind of think it will be harder to align things to the car if you weld the panels together first.

You can try offering the panels up to the car, aligning things and tack them up, then remove them and weld them together , but why bother.

No matter what panels you have they will need  "fitted and fettled" to the car anyway.

I wouldn't want to do them all in one like that, it'd be even harder to get lined up surely.  you want the ability to adjust all the clamps on each piece gradually to get everything to match up

seems to me the important one positionally is the front panel, fit the subframe and bolt that in place - maybe add a couple of washers or shims to the inside to give a few mm space for subframe in/out - then work at the other panels until they meet up right before you start welding it up

Cheers guys, yes that makes complete sense. I was wondering why people tended to weld it piece by piece

Personally i would'nt weld off the car. As mentioned the front panel really needs to be fitted to the subframe first then go from there.

And uup Magnum panels make you fight for a decent fit, however as i found out with my Clubby, Heitage panels can also be an arse as well.

A dozen small mole grips are very useful when trying to line up panels.

I get everything prepped for welding and fit everything to the car with the subframe and bonnet. Once everything’s clamped up and I’m happy with the fit I put a tac weld between the wing & front panel in each bonnet opening and edge of the wheel opening.

The tacs and clamps hold everything in place abd I flip the assembly over and weld from the bottom up although I now have a spot welder to do it now.

just a general pointer really, posts get really confusing if you go back in time and change them completely lol.  editing out errors is one thing but now none of the replies make any sense!

better off just carrying on the thread and updating with the new info in the next post really

I don't have anything to add about A posts as I've not done it myself but I'm sure others will be able to advise, good luck with it!
