Presuming that the gears are in neutral when your hear sounds while sitting in the car, why not try opening the bonnet, increasing the idle speed and using a length of hose as a stethoscope, see if you can find the area of the engine from where the noise is emanating ?

Yes have done this . It around tappet area. I’m just curious as to whether tappets magnify in sound more at certain revs than others.
