I've just stripped out my roof lining and having a look at how this sunroof is fitted in (80s Mayfair if that makes any difference)

Have pulled it all apart to the point where I now have what seems to be a frame which is simply glued to the roof panel (I may be wrong)

I'm thinking, if I try and pull that out I'm probably gonna bend the roof panel and damage the frame, might be better to leave it alone and work around it (including prep and paint on top)

I can still replace / revitalise the original rubber trim, that all pulled out easy enough

What do other people do usually? TIA

Trying to get spares for these can be a bloody nightmare so if you do decide to remove the frame you may end up with the hole of despair.

yeah that was my fear, and I'm definitely not welding it in.. so +1 for just leaving it alone then

The only person I knew who removed the sunroof ended up fitting a complete new roof panel and headlining and no longer had a sub-roof.. They can be very difficult.

I love sumroofs in minis , I think they work really well but they can leak and are a PITA when doing repairs. Spares are almost non existant but new sunroofs seem to be available on ebay et al. I am reno-ing a mini with a sunroof at the moment and intend to work around it.

I removed the sunroof from my shell (mini advantage) and it was in two halves, inner and outer. The halves were screwed together with around 10 screws and what looked like seam sealer.
It came out easy peasy and unbroken.

I don't think mines the same as that.  I've taken out all the screws I can find and there was an inner rim / surround that came out (was holding the roof lining)  now I just have 1 piece left (far as I can tell)

 

I wonder if they changed it later on to make it easier to fit and remove, or maybe mines a later version they just plonked in with glue to save time on the production line
