Hi, is there a certain sequence/ position to connect the rod change to the gear box ie can you get it wrong ?
My car came as an unknown quantity so it may have gearbox issues - the rod change was disconnected and other parts were missing . I’ve reconnected it but seem to have only 3rd and 4th, and no reverse, so wonder if there’s anything I’ve done, or does the box haven’t come off ?

You would normally put the gearstick into reverse to knock the roll pin out so that’s a good position to start.

What other parts were removed? There is a detent ball and spring under the RH diff cover that could have gone awry if removed.

Thanks, that could be it ! I didn’t select reverse to put it back in, just put it back in the easiest position

You can’t fit it incorrectly but you can assemble it incorrectly. Often the plate on the bottom of the housing.

Turns out I’d fitted the rod upside down, which meant that as the gear stick was moved left to right, the rod didn’t rotate. Wondered why the gate was so sloppy !
Quick fix and car has just had its first drive in 20 yrs.
