Consider me shocked.  On a recent trip through the Dartford Crossing (going north), I was in the queue of traffic trying to enter the tunnel.  As I was sitting there, pondering my life choices, I was amazed then shocked to see the state of the crash barriers, between the north and southbound lanes.  Although no expert, these were not the normal curvy armco barrier but the more substantial boxy barrier, which I thought were more robust to prevent crossover.  Inside the rear of the boxy barrier, on the bottom, was a pile of rust.  Worse, in several places, were rust holes, where I could peer through!  Surely, there structural integrity must be compromised, with them being in that condition?  No wonder they have been putting in the concrete island barriers on motorways.

60 years ago, Harry Wheatcroft, a well known Rose Grower, acquired quite a lot of publicity by demanding that Roses should be planted either side of the crash barriers as they were installed.

 

He claimed 2 advantages.  1)  It would reduce glare from on coming headlights.  2)  Mowing them down as the vehicle veered towards the barrier, would slow it.

 

A third would have been, that you wouldn't worry about the condition of the barrier, because you wouldn't see it.
