The mini Sky I'm working on has been standing since 2007 and now I've got to the stage of starting it I've noticed that the new 5 Litres of petrol is now a horrible dark brown colour. So I cleaned out the card and lines and now have the petrol tank out of the car. Can anyone recommend a suitable solution to use to clean the tank? Added a couple of photos to show the muck! PS the sender has had it so bought a new one.

Vinegar is supposed to be good for rusty tanks but Ive not tried it.

I had 10 Litres of white vinegar and put 5 Litres in over 24 hours ( sloshed it around a couple of times). I've just emptied it out and was surprised to see the results as it resulted in a dark brown liquid and when emptying the bucket a brown sludge was left in the bottom of the bucket. I've now put half the another white vinegar in and repeat and see what the colour is like.

There are kits available to clean small capacity tanks, motorcycles come to mind, that work well.  With a tank that has been ignored for that long, there is always the chance of leak from rust damage so once the cleaning is complete, you might consider coating the interior as well.

POR-15 repair kit from Frost works very well in cleaning and repairing the inter8or of a fuel tank. Think that may be what croc7 is thinking about.

The white vinegar seems to be doing the job so I've bought another 20 Litres!

After you've cleaned the tank, you should consider putting a liner through it. like the POR15 Kit that Jerry (Croc7) and coopered mentioned, otherwise it'll rust again in no time.

I've used a few of the POR15 kits and found them very good, just be sure to follow the instructions to the letter.

I used the Frost tank cleaning/sealing kit to do the Midas tank, and I don't know what's in the "Marine Clean" solution they use, but it is VERY effective at cleaning out everything your tank has to offer.
