As with all Mini's mine had a rust all over the place. The result of that was that even the engine identificstion plat was rusted away. Not a pgoblem as the engine as torn apart and rebuilt anyway so I could see all that was inside. However, I would like to put a new plate on there with some means of identitying what is is. The GuessWorks tool is great and very detailed, IF you a a complete number and a factory engine. Mine is neither, so here is the idea/question.

 

Can anyone put together some type of engine number that describes (at least some of) the things I've done to it? 

 

I'm not looking for anything exactly correct as it is merely a thing to finish of the engine and if it can be done in a meaningfull way than it is even better. So here are the specs:

 

Standard to the engine and renewed

• A+ block
• Dished pistons 
• Diaphragm clutch
• 4 synchro box
• 3:44 final drive
• Alternator

 

Altered items

• Minispares C-AHT88 head 
• Minispares EVO001 cam
• Electric fuel pump
• Twin SU HS2

Is there anyway to make an engine number that resembles even some of the items above? Any help is greatly appreciated!

I would not even try. The head should already be stamped. The engine just stamp it with CCs and cam.

I figured since someone seems to have a database with all the subnumbers identifying numerous things I'd be a fun idea. You're probably right, fun idea but execution is a different thing. Good idea about stamping it with CC and cam. A number indicating dished pistons I can probably find or maybe just make up something like 99H-DISH-EVO001. The rest is visible from the outside anyway. 

 

Funny thing about this engine is though, it came with dished pistons with a press fit gudgeon pin. New pistons and assembly was years ago, however it seems dished pistons with a press fit pin weren't common or even never available in a 998 Mini?

Stampings and plates are great for when first put back together - after that - the life of the engine, rebuilt parts etc can alter what is said and what is found inside.

 

I like the race mechanic book idea - where all of the info is linked to a Number of tag. Crucial parts and measurements are kept in the build diary - thrust washer float, torqued figures, timing figures - which are all great when you dismantle to compare -   (Examples how much your timing chain has stretcehed-  cam lift altered)

 

What do the local constabulary want/permit

but if it's a bitsa , the number wont really be relevant
