I've read conflicting information about the piston position for removing the flywheel - to prevent the C clip dropping off and jamming the flywheel. Some things I've read have suggested it needs to be at TDC, others say to have the pistons at half stroke, some say the slot/cut must be horizontal.

In the attached photo the engine is at TDC but the slot is vertical rather than horizontal. Am I better rotating the engine so the pistons are at half stroke before attempting removal?

Engine is an old 998 that I've picked up to try and learn a bit.

The grooves are aligned with the crank webs. So it's safest to put all the pistons halfway between top & bottom dead centre, then you won't be caught out if somebody put the C clip in 180 degrees out.

The only manual that says it should be at TDC is the very first versions. All the other workshop manuals,Haynes,Rover, BL etc all say put the slots Horizontal. They have many different ways of saying it and many people do not read all the words.
