i'm assuming you mean to mount subs in? If so this would depend on the specs of the sub you were using. If you just build a box and throw a sub in it you will not get the full potential out of it and may even damage it! Many pre built so called universal boxes are built around an average size that speaker manufacturers recommend these are less than ideal.
You could build a really big box and put 'free-air' subs in it which are a bit more tolerable but again its only a compromise.

Don't take out your back seats.

Listen, when you get a bit older, and start going to the pub with your mates, you'll be grateful for that rickety bench in the back of your car. It menas that you can legally carry another 3 people in your car. That means that you can drive, and can take home 4 *Drunk or yellow human water*-up mates rather than just the one.

I know it seems like a good idea, but unless you're making a race car, it's not practical.

i think what phil is trying to say is decide what size subs your going to have, then build the box to suit, to get the maximum performance from them. :D

Really, if you take the back seats out, you'll really regret it. I know that it seems like a good idea now, but I have a couple of mates who did that, and wish that they hadn't now!

i've gotta admit i'd miss my back seat, it doesn't get used very often but simple things like shopping, dog, mates kids stuff like that would be out of the question. What you could do is make a box thats easily removable and could be swapped for the backseat fairly quickly.
Personally i would just mount a free air sub in either the rear shelf, or on the back of the seat. It takes a bit of cutting but you get a good sound and no loss of rear seat and very little loss of bootspace.

If you are building a box you need to know exactly which one you will use rather than just a size. If you check the specs of subs they list an ideal size, and a max and min size for sealed or ported enclosures. So you need to build to suit.

But I do agree that you're better off with a back seat. For one thing people are less likely to smash your car up to nick your rear bench. And remember that you'll have to insure this one day, and by the time you're 17 it'll cost mortgage money to insure a car if you're a guy. Most insurances only cover a stereo up to around £250 to £500.

thats the good thing with the way i've done it because the sub is bolted to the mdf and the mdf is bolted to the car with sixteen bolts. so it would take a while to remove it.
