Here’s something I’ve not run into before. A friend has a car, a late model, Cabriolet SPI, the car will start and run and rev like crazy in neutral. It’s able to accelerate in reverse just as normal. But in first gear, attempting to go forward, it’s sputters and coughs, refuses to run. Any ideas?

Look for a loose connection/short in the wiring, especially in the vicinity of the clutch master cylinder.
Inspect the engine mountings, and replace the engine steady bushes.

If an spi then get acr2 or acr4 diagnostics on the go and don't just throw car parts at this issue.
The electric controls on these all need to be tip top for them to all combine and work properly.
These spi's also suffer from air leaks or cracks in the plastic fitments for vacume system..
Never easy but stick in and be methodical.
