Does anyone know if this is urban myth, or were the Mk I Super Deluxes supplied with wicker baskets that slid under the back seat?

I think they were only offered as a BMC accessory not as factory fitted standard.
The 1959 Mini Register have had the under rear seat baskets (and rear side bin baskets) reproduced to a very high standard, and are offering these for sale at £97.50 per pair including UK postage:-
