I have been doing some research and when i finally get a mini when i am in the states i might try and do a supercharger conversion myself.

Does anyone know what the 'mods' are that are done to the supercharger to get it to work on a A series engine?

cheers

saw both scurvy dog's and jonspeed at the shows. Scurvy uses the jonspeed kit as far as i could tell.

Jonspeed mentioned a Mod to the supercharger inside, but didnt let on what exactly was modded or why.

I can't imagine what internal mods are carried out, sounds like some cooper conversion spiel like rotor coating.

Basically the inlet lip on the charger needs removing, this can then be drilled and tapped to accept the inlet manifold which also is a fabricated item (presumably your'll be using a suck through system)

I also have toothed gearing, so i've removed the press fit pulley and machined a flat side on the drive shaft to lock on the new pulley, when I say machined, I carefully used a 125mm cutting disc in a grinder to cut through one side of the press fit pulley and cut the flat on the shaft in one go.
And I do mean carefully, neither the charger or the engine will run well on metal particals.

The pulleys should have arround 2.1 gearing from the crank as the charger can spin at 14000 rpm.

Then a toothed pulley is fitted to the crank and a tensioner mounted somewhere convenient, mine has a bracket from the charger.

Inlet manifold from the charger outlet, designed to position the charger so the drive pulley is aligned with the crank pulley.

Also i've machined a small amount from around the charger discharge to help flow, this should become obvisous when you've made you manifold, I will at some stage post pictures off the system in pieces, but at the moment I'm working away from home

I like pictures a lot!!

when yo say the inlet of the charger do yiou mean the bit where the carb will attch to or the bit that attches to the head?

looking at pics i think you mean the bit that attches to the carb.

No internal mods are carried out.

I've psoken with scurvy at great length about this and he spent ages trying to get the SC apart to see if the internals needed modding.

The unit is sealed and therefore none where done. But i'm sure if you ask jonspeed he will let you know.

Scurvy's kit is different from jonspeed AFAIK

well if scurvy is the guy we saw at malvern then it is the same as the jonspeed kit. he told us!! and it had a jonspeed tag/sticker attached to it so people would know it was the same as the one inside

i can see they're logic!! if you're doing it as suck thru wudnt the amount of vacuum the carb is under at high rpm cause the butterfly to implode or anything??

wudda thought a blow thru turbo carb would have been simpler!!

I think that the carb does need converting to a sealed type

the picture on the home page is rfom an injection car!! look at the elastic tricks on the engine bay!! looks like an air flow meter after the air filter!!

looking theru the site other pics show a carb is a suck thru application!! that shudnt require any mods at all!!
