good morning,

Recently i have been looking into non-mini engine conversions and whilst browsing a few sites i found many weird and wounderful custom made roll cages. I have no rear seats in my car and its of a stripped out nature so as long as there is enough room for a driver and pasanger everything will be peachy. I would idealy like door bars and a dash bar. i would also like 2 rear diaagonals to meet in the bacl of the car to make a X type shape and i would also like to do this above the front seats.

I would really like to get some thing looking like the above, i mean you dont see it to often. But what kind of things will i need to take into consideration when i do some thing like this? I dont want it up to any outstanding quality and supreme strenghts but i would like it to withstand a good woolop on the road.

Thanks, Tomm

Seems dodgy to me. It's like making your own seatbelts or something... I'd try and get a professional to create one if you really have to have custom.

Seems dodgy to me too! You need to know what effect someone hitting you would have on the cage. For example, it would be no good having a weld that was weak when hit from a certain angle, breaking it and sending a pole into your head! :)
And certain areas to mount the cage etc, i think it would be far too easy to end up making yourself less safe in the event of an accident!

Have a look at as many self built cages on 16V as possible, there are quite a number on there, theres also a few topics on the subject over there.

Personally, as long as your welding is ok, and you use a decent tube with a big enough wall, you should be able to make a very safe cage for yourself, and you won't believe how much you can save over other cages on the market!

Mowog - did you bend the tube yourself? If so where the hell did you get a bender with the correct size die for 38mm o/d? I'm also using 38mm od tube but cant find a die to fit correctly. PM'd
