Evenin folks,

Well I just got back from KwikFit and have a had a bit of a shocker!

I was wondering if you guys could clarify my options from here on....

My car is a '94 L reg, running a 1275 with a HIF38 carb.....this is giving me an emission figure of 2.9%.

This apparently is a problem because:

a)a car from '94's emissions have to be <0.3% *edit*
b)there is no way of getting my engine anywhere near this

...so sayeth the KwikFit man.

So what the hell do I do from here?

One option that a mechanic I know said was to buy a knackered pre '92 mini and transfer the reg...Is this my only option? (other than getting an MOT from a..'less reputable' source?)

Any guidance would be much apreciated.

Cheers,

FG.

Can you find a 'less reputable' source than kwik-fit?

I wouldn't trust the kwik-fit man as far as could throw him....have you got a reputable mini specialist/RR nearby?

Only mini garage is M+M's but I've got 'issues' with them from long ago.....MiniSport would be my nearest RR.

That's completely illegal !!! If you want to risk a big telling off from the authorities and risk getting your car crushed, by all means do it and brag about it on a public forum !!!!

Other people manage to get their '94 minis through an MOT so I don't see how it can't be done !!
Shouldn't a '94 have a cat?

<0.003%? My pushbike gives off more hydrocarbons than that!

Take it somewhere the MOT inspector can read!

The cat was removed for a straight through exhaust...

This is where the KwikFit man started to sound like he was trying to blind me with bull sh*t. - He reckoned that the only way a cat would get it down to <0.3 is via an engine management system... i.e. an SPi ... This is roughly the time I started heading through the door and onto the forum.

This is a production car with a carb and it came from the factory like that!

They have tested your car on the 'year' and not the engine.

They need to look at the engine numbers that way identifying the fac its a carb engine and a co emissions of <3%

in that sense its passed

Id be taking it up with vossa, there are phone numbers on the documents you have been isued

oh and there is a clause i believe at the back of the Mot testers book regarding minis with carbs and cats

Yes tell them to look it up because they have to treat carb Minis differently, but like what's been said above, they probably can't read!

its deffo a carb engine because i remember you having touble with the bypass hose. Injection cars dont have this.

another thing that tells me that this is the original engine is the vac stat in the thermostat housing is there as is all the pipe work.

Id be going back and getting them to re test it on the correct regulations and if they wont, phone VOSSA on your mobile while standing next to him.

My bad for thinking they might be up to providing a decent service!
(I hate garages)

I'll give them a call tomorrow and suggest they may want to refund the cost of my MOT. Failing that I;ll go via VOSA.

Thanks again for your help fellas.
(I really hate garages)

Other than the emmisions then.....how much do you guys reckon to sort two worn track rod ends and a split seering rack gaiter?? Or am I better off getting it all re-checked by a competent garage??

Cheers again.

FG.

Track rod ends are a peice of *yellow human water* if you have a decent joint splitter. The gator isnt much more difficult, though ive never had to do one, i think they are just two ties and it slides off.

Hour job at the most
