how do i adjust the distributor timing as i have a perfect mixture(methinks) but it is misfireing under harsh accelaration (dashpot oil is correct) it has had a electronic service minus capacitior and coil( capacitior is next then i play with dissy timing) but would like to know how to this as i have never done it before is it simple?

how do u know your mixture is perfect??

to advance the timing you need to turn the distributor clockwise!! tho all you can do without specialised equipment is change the starting point!! the actual advance curve will remain the same unless you get the dizy tailored to the engine!!

Indeed fikus.

The timing / ignition system should be the first thing to get setup correct when tuning an engine, then the fueling can be dealt with.

by specialised eqipment i am meaning a rolling road or bench dyno setup so u can check the engine under part and full load and check the fuelling isnt going lean in the revs anywhere!! just because a book says your car used that needle doesnt mean its a perfect match!! minis arent japanese and lack a lot of precision. compressions vary massivly, there are bad cast heads and badly made and timed camshafts, too many variants to worry about out of factory so they made an average guess of what the cars needed.

basic idea with timing a mini is if u have a 998 engine use a 998 dizzy and advance the timing as far as u can without hearing pinking, some folk fit 1275 items to make the car go faster but that doesnt work. just make sure all is good and let us know what else u find or if the problem doesnt go away.
