I have a semi-technical question:

If I were to convert my '71 MKIII shell to accept a rod-change box, would I have to cut so much of the tunnel away that I would never be able to change it back? I am considering doing this so that I can fit my A+ SCCR 'box into the shell, but obviously that is rod change.

What other options do I have? Could I use the A+ internals inside the remote change 'box? Is the casing up to the job? I will be running IRO 100 donkies and hopefuly a bucketfull of torque through this 'box and also the rubber couplings.

Basically, how much modifying is required to fit the rod change doofah? Would it be lessened if I were to fit a couple of UJ's to the rod change and fit the gearshift higher up, inside the vehicle?

EDIT: Actually, the tunnel appears flatter than a later rod change one, perhaps this would leave the base of the gear change unit too low? Maybe it's best all around if I try to rig it all up internally as I suggested above.

I expect the easiest think to do is replace the tunnel from a later model mini....

I think webweavers may be able to help there as he has a 30 which I believe is being cut up.

Never realy had a close inspection...

As for putting the internals into a remote, yes it's possible, but the reverse idler would need to be changed, as would your idler gear in the drops, both of which would be dependant on availability...

i reckon doing an internal onversion would be the simplest and quickest way

Hmmm, cheers for that John. I will have to have a serious think about it. I could use the tunnel from a scrap shell that I have at my mum's house (must move it soon) :gimme:

I might cut the tunnel from the scrap shell anyway, so I can use it as a pattern to compare the two setups. Then I can see just how different they are. :D

the remote is much bigger than the rods so i think no mods are needed to the tunnel
in fact i am almost 100% sure (apart from drilling new holes for the rod box)

But the remote is mounted in a totally different place (off to the left, rather than tunnel centre). :D

have you found a conversion plate? i reckon there must be some cutting for the hole but apart from that it shoulod fit in the tunnel ok

Not yet, dunno if they exist yet :D

EDIT: Just gonna take some paper and make a template off the MKV tunnel and overlay it on the NKIII to see how it compares. If it's only a case of drilling 4 bolt holes and enlarging the cutout then that's not a major problem really.
