just picked up a 92 106 1.4 xt but it has a running problem it starts but has no power to pull away, it just dies it seems like an ignition or timing fault, it looks to have had the cam belt done recently could it have been mucked up and the timing knocked out buy 180 degrees??? definatly seems to be ignition fault though

any help guys and gals please

i didnt think it would run at all if the timing was 180 degrees out!! i would be looking more in the direction of a broken throttle pedal switch or throttle position sensor personally!!

i have a mate with a 106 rallye and he's raced them too, if he comes online i'll ask!

These engines are really fussy when it comes to cam timing. even 1 tooth out can cause it to run flat with no power. Is on a distributor or coil pack?

the camshaft turns at half the speed of the crank, so every two revolutions the timing will be 180 degrees out anyway. if its only when it is warm, it could be a weak mixture, as the choke is on when its cold. this could be caused by badly set mixture, or an airleak somewhere round the carb system

i dont think its a carb'd engine, but id be thinking dodgy sensor!! where are you based?? it says south london on u profile!! you could take her to http://www.atspeed.00go.com/ thats where minicros948 works, and they specialise in the TU lump!! and the mini lump for that matter!! all down to what the guvner used to race!!

Follow the top radiator hose to the engine and look for 2 sensors /engine coolant temp sensors/ unplug them and try it.
if it dosent make any difference it could also be the lamba probe on the downpipe.
usually the coolant sensor to the ecu tho.

unpluged the front one and the engine just cuts out, so pluged that one back in

unplugged the rear one and it ran fine for a little while, then started playing up so i'm guessing that i need to replace the rear sensor as a starting point, yes???

cheers

One of those sensors is the temp guage green or blue i cant remember but one does not make any difference to the engine running, it will just stop the temp gauge working. pay atention to the other one, it could be open or closed circuit. this acts like a automatic choke its a very comon fault.
Also worth checking the water level bleed valves . top left of the rad and one on the heater hose behind the throttle body, as low coolant could be your problem not reaching the sensor.
the tank on the side of the rad may look full but it will drop when you remove thr bleed screws.

That should keep you busy

still at the same stage really, had the breather vent open by the throttle body, and there was a little air in there, so let that out with the engine running, but i couldnt find the rad breather??? gonna order a new sensor, very soon but still no further along
