today i went to start my garaged mini....i pressed the clutch before i started it like im used to do with other cars. it didnt start with the clutch pedal pressed, but when i tried to start it without pressing the clutch it started. is this normal? i always thought that pressing the clutch would make starting easier as the starter would have less load.

I could be wrong but if there is a bit of play in the crankshaft then this could be moving slightly making the pistons tighter so it would be harder for it to turn over. Does the engine turn over when your foot is on the clutch? and does putting you foot on the clutch effect the engine when it is running?

Dont take my word for this as i am not sure :gimme:

Welcome to TMF by the way, sure somone else will be able to tell you if im right or wrong

Hello il-barba. This is a 998, SU carb with manual choke? Do you need choke at start-up in your garage in Malta? So far from what you've said the clutch in/out sounds like a coincidence.

the negine turns over, but it wouldnt start, and when started it doesnt matter if i press the clutch no.

yes manual choke...i gave it some choke as it hasnt been started for over a week. but no usually one wouldnt need to choke especially in summer as its so hot.

i dont really have a problem with it but i found it strange :gimme:

You could just as well be right, mate. Minis are cantankerous little beasties! Il-barba, let us know in a while if there's a pattern here, or it gets more pronounced. Happy Christmas! :gimme:

if the engine turns faster with the clutch up and slower with it down then the cain thrust washer on the crank could be very worn!! it happens!! personally i think its more strain on the starter to press the pedal! especially if you have an uprated clutch!!

today i bought new petrol and prepared to start the car. i have cranked it over in these past months and sometimes it even started (running on wd40). with the new petrol it doesnt matter if the clutch is pressed or not. i had the float chamber overflowing and we adjusted it and now its not overflowing.

i have two questions. my friend told me that maybe the rockers are not getting enough oil since there is no splashing on them. instead there is only oil where the springs sit. even when we opened the rocker cover there was no visible oil coming up (ive never seen it either, but my friend works with a mechanic, but never worked on a mini) i have low level of oil, a little below minimum but pressure is at 60/70 so its good i think for the car being cold. is there any problem or the oil does not splash or something but goes up with some mechanism?

also i have smoke coming out from where hot air comes to heat the intake. is that the manifold gasket? there is no hissing sound or something

The rockers are oil fed from within the rocker shaft not by oil splash, this is a properly designed engine!

by the way I know you've already cleared this up but starting the engine with the clutch depressed puts loads of extra strain on the starter. The hydraulic effort of the clutch is applied to the thrust washers which are bearing directly on the crankshaft. This is true of all engines with manual transmissions. Turning a manual gearbox in neutral applies almost no additional load to the crank by comparison with the thrust washers. Only start using the clutch if the car is for some reason stuck in gear and it is an emergency.

In a rarely used engine, smoke from the manifold could be anything that may have landed on it. It is probably all the WD40 you've been spraying into the engine that has landed on the manifold and is now burning off.
