Hi
I am in the process of adding cooland to my Mk1 cooper. It is a 998cc, and after I removed the thermostat, it has 88 degrees Celcius on the bottom. however, Minispares only a few days ago sold me a 74 degree thermostat saying that is the correct one.
So, for a 998 cooper Mk1, what thermostat is correct? The cylinder head has been converted to run unleaded, if that makes a difference.
Thanks

Which thermostat?

74 seems a little low to be using at this time of year!! id go with an 88 or 82 degree personally, would only really stoop as low as the 74 in extremely hot summer months!!

even in the basking heat of oz i would run a thermostat. if it was only a 74 degree one it stil helps the engine get upto temperature quickley and it maintains a steady temperature. all of this is good for an engine. they like their constants. weather its oil pressure/temperature, water temperature, revs, u name it.

I stuck an 82 degree stat in there, I think its a good alround one, as the mini is a show car, will always be garaged, and so will unlikely to have a really cold morning start.
I sorted the cooling system today, flushed it, replaced coolant with the new stat and it seems fine.
Oh, bye the way, I also painted the thermostat housing and the main problem I have it looks newer than anything else on the engine!
