I was driving to my girl friends work do this eve no probs, then I just took my foot off the accelerator but I didn't slow down! I continued to cruise at about 40 in 4th!

My first thought is a sticky throttle cable, I pulled over, the car was then idling at about 2500 rpm, I switched her off and popped the bonnet and had a look. Everything looked ok, the throttle cable was a bit slack, but it has always been with no probs, and the spring pulling back the lever on the carb was all connected and pulling it tight, as was the spring on the choke lever too.

HUH!

Started her up again and drove slowly into town!

Did it on the way back too. I got home, sat on the drive in neutral at 2000 rpm! idle and pushed the accelerator hard and released, it just idled even higher! Then I pulled the choke hard and then let it go but that didn't make any difference. Maybe a sticky choke? However the choke spring is pulling it back tight fine.

I really don't understand! The fuel mixture link on the choke moves freely too.

WHAT???

Have you checked the normal things; timing, mixture, oil in the dashpot?

The inner cable on either could be damaged and catching on the outer sheath as it tries to move inside it. Cables aren't expensive, just replace. Hard to say which cable it might be.

Make sure neither cable is routed near the exhaust or anything else very hot inside the engine bay as this can always damage the cables and stop them moving freely.

Could be the thottle linkage is sticking on the carb itself.

i have a 998 once running v.low compression, i just managed to get it running, just tickover etc, drove her to newquay for the riviera run and about half way down she started ticking over at 3000rpm, whatever it was the long drive had cleaned everything up and i had to alter the timing several times to get her runing properly.
as far as carbs go change the cable and if it stil does it then start looking at the carb butterfly could be sticking!

Thank you for all your help!

I fixed her today, the choke return spring was hooked on the throttle return spring, and the throttle one had stretched a little so it wouldn't return all the way!

I just removed the choke spring all together and she's running fine now.

Also, the accelerator cable had slipped through the clamping bit, so I was only ever getting the carb half open with my foot on the floor! I've pulled the cable tight now, and it has made so much difference! I managed to get 90mph the other day (on a private road  ) and that would have only been half throttle, have to see what she's pulling now eh.

I love my mini :w00t:
