Since its been cold my mini has acted badly on starting. It turns over really slowly, but still starts in the same amount of time. I beleieve it may have something to do with the 20w50 trans M oil im using. As it has been slower to turn over sinse i first started using it back in september.

I realise that 20w50 is thicker in winter hence the grading etc. But what im worried about is that the engine is being damaged during the cold starting and the initial warm up period because the oil isnt performing well due to its thickness.

Your thoughts and opinions are appreciated.

Once the car is warmed up though it wroks much better on this oil and the gear change action is far better. Although up until then it runs badly and "kinda "bogs down"

any cold oil will cause damage to the engine til its warmed!! i cant see it being any worse than any other oil.

mite be worth checking out the engine and battery earths, remove them and clean them back to bare metal then re-fit and cover with vaseline and see if its any better!!

i run 20-50 in mine all year and it doesnt start worse in the winter!!

Everyone on here recommended that a 20w50 oil be used rather than rovers recommended 15w40 because all minis are best on the 20w50 regardless of age, but surely tolerances would have changed etc.
And it bothered me that perhaps because im using this oil rather than the recomended it was breaking down on start up and causing excessive damage. As opposed to minimal as caused by normal oil.
And i realise that any cold oil will cause some damage at start up, it was the degree of damage which was of concern.
just being on the side of caution.

i cant see it being a problem with wear unless you literally drive a 5 minit journey each way to work in which case with any oil that will be damaging!!

honestly check and clean to bare metal the earth straps. the one from the engine to under the engine steady bar is usually the wort because the bolt gets ruined by water and brake fluid. try moving this one so it goes from the engine to the inner wing.

if it bothers you that much then do an oil change but i cant see it making much difference at all. maybe it would if you were using 80-90 gear oil but 20-50 no.
