All good fun my antenna was a avanti sigma 4 for 10 meters, it looked like an upside down umbrella 59 foot from the ground to the top.
Also had beams, dipoles, long wires and a lot of home brew ones. I always got the blame for any tv interference in the street :(

I bought an icom pcr scanner last year off ebay 0 to 1200 mhz all modes. now that was fun decoding pager freqs etc.
I sold it about 3 months ago after hearing some thing i was not to know in our street if you know what i mean.

Hi all just browsing and picked up on this thread, I have just bough a CB off my cousin, will certainly be plubing it in to the mini, reckon a rear bumper mounted aerial wont look too bad and at 1.5 meters in height reception ought not be bad either.

Reckon CB is better than two way radios from argos or similar as better range, can be a stylish interio feature of the car and also reckon more people out and about en route to shows etc will have CB as opposed to hand held, also if no minis out and about there are always plenty of trucks to have a crack with too.

Cheers BM

Don't forget that a rear bumper mounted antenna will affect the signal propagation, it will be STRONGLY biased to the rear of the car (most of the signal will be directed behind you, and very little towards the front of the car), so you might need to reverse your car around to get a better signal for any given destination.

The ideal place for the antenna is in the centre of the roof, this will give a fairly even omni-directional signal (not biased to any direction / fairly even coverage in all directions). Obviously this can be a problem with a tall antenna.

The bumper mount should still work OK for convoy as long as the other vehicles are not too far in front (prolly less than a 1/4 mile give or take).

Hi,

Have decided upon a boot monted aerial and a 1.55 meter base loaded arial so hopefully will not be too bad, also being brutally honest I dont like the idea of a mag mount on the roof as think it looks a bit add on and temporary whereas the boot mounted one looks like a more permenant fixture.

Will an off the shelf arial work for both AM and FM?

lets get the cb back into fashion again, im one of the only users around my area now, a little while back it was busy on there all day and night , i use a maycom em27 mobile rig http://www.coastalco.../maycomem27.jpg and just a small 3foot mag mount that i have had comms with 4 watts over a distance of 21 miles (moving over open country, slightly hilly , to another mobile user)

this is a good shop for anttenas, they got window mounted ones , mag mounts, the well knows fire stic's and a new one to me its a permanent one that looks like a bee sting antenna like the ones cars have for fm ,not sure on how goo it is but it looks cool and must work ok at 21 inch long http://www.4x4cb.com...Browse=Products

its definatly a good adition to a car, and cheaper than mobiles lol

Im definately going to buy myself a CB radio for my mini, all I need to decide is where im going to mount the aerial.
Most people are saying roof, some are saying boot (how do you mount it to a boot ? ).

I was thinking maybe I could just mount the aerial in the hole on the left wing of the car at the front next to the bonnet. Shouldnt the aerial fit in there fine because thats what its meant for really (at the minute it has like a rubber grommet on it ).

also ......

power lead with inline fuse which will require a simple red-to-positive / black-to-negative connection to your battery.

Tip : Taking the power direct from the battery means less chance of interference from your ignition & wipers, and you can have the CB on regardless of what position your ignition key is in.

does this mean I need to wire power cables all the way to the boot ?

I don't. I only use it for mini runs. I picked up some random transport company outside my house and then still had them on the channel when I got to London. Ofcourse I lost them by the time we got to Brighton.
