Hi all,

The rear brakes needed replacing on my P reg Mini, so I went out bought some new shoes thinking this would be a quick easy job. However...

I got the new shoes on fine then went to put the drum back on and found that it didn't fit over the new shoes! I slackend the handbrake completly but still no joy. Then I phoned the place where I got the shoes from and double checked they were the right ones - which apparantly they are. I also inspected the inside of the drum for signs of any type of lip that might stop it going over, but the inside is fine.

Anyone got any ideas?

Hi,

Yeah had the adjuster as slack as it could go. Do you know if there's specific types of shoes for different models because I was told that for the rear brakes there all the same?

Have you fitted the shoes and the springs correctly? Try comparing them with the other side of the car (unless you've already changed them too?).

Anyway I don't know if I'll get in trouble for doing this, but here's a useful link I found:-

check the wedges on the adjuster. the slanting bit should be touching to the screw not the other side. as i had this problem yesterday, and after i managed to make the drum enter i noticed that the other side were the other way round!

I Had This, Is It On Your Drivers Side (Nearside)
The Drum Will Have A Lip Inside Where The Drum Has Worn Over The Years.
It Will Need Turning On A Lathe.

Make sure the shoes arent just slightly off center, i.e. check for an even distance between the shoe and the lip on the backplate.
