hi guys got a problem with me temprature gauge it's in the red but the engine is not overheating, car runs great iv'e changed the rad, thermerstat, sender, could it be the clock.it,s a 1972 mini 1000 should have a centre clock but someone has put the two dial clocks in,do they read different because iv'e been told there the same, the only thing i can think is it's the head gasket but there is no sign of this, does anybody have any ideas before i start ripping my engine to pieces.

Could be the wiring from the sender to the clock, does it go into the red straight away or gradually creep up there ?

How have you taken the overheating theory away? If its a gradual increase over time then I would not rule out the fact that the engine is getting too hot, what is the water pressure like, any air leaks in the system?
Any smoke / oil usage / water loss?

no had the wire checked and it's giving 12.6 volts,no pressure in the water ,no loss of water,i've had a probe on the engine and it's running around 60 to 70 oc so i'm stuck i'm gonna do the gasket just to rule it out,i'll let you know what happens, thanks for the replys guys.

You didnt answer the question about whether it goes straight up to red or not :) If it goes straight up then the wire from the sender to the gauge is shorting somewhere. If it gradually rises up to the red then there could be an issue with the gauge. Is the fuel gauge reading ok ? If not then it is probably an issue with the voltage regulator.

Theres no point changing the head gasket if you 'know' the engine is running at normal temperature and there are no other signs that its gone.

sorry mate the gauge rises slowly and the fuel reads correct, just had it running and i'm getting a few like champagne bubbles when i've got the top off the rad is this a sign of gasket ,the only other thing i can think of is that the clocks don,t match up with the temperatre sensor

You could try a new sender unit for the sake of a few quid.
It may be the head gasket have you noted that the temp goes up faster under labour/up hills

it's had a new sensor and haven't noticed any difference when going up hills,i'ts really a strange one,i thought about putting some bars leaks in the water and seeing if that would seal any gasket leaks if it's got some and if it does then do the gasket but i don,t really want to put that poo in my water system.

Bubbles in the water do suggest the gasket has gone I guess. Could be the water pump though so its worth doing both at the same time :)

if the water pump was a problem would it leak water or not because it doesn't.

Possibly, but it could be the blades internally have gone so its just frothing the water about rather than pumping it round the system :)
