Went to tax my mini the other day. and noticed i had an advisory for my next MOT.

It says:

"003 Inner Front track rod end ball joint has slight play [2.2.B 1f]"

What does this mean?

what bits do i need to replace it?

Do i just need one of these?

Thanks

JoeB

Yes, this is the product of the computerised MOT system, when it last had it's MOT the examiner noticed that it was suspect, but not bad enough to fail the vehicle on... At your next MOT, they should take note of the advisories, and will take particular consideration as to it's present condition. So is advisable to change ( may save you a retest fee which will be at least 3 times the cost of the trackrod end ! )

"003 Inner Front track rod end ball joint has slight play [2.2.B 1f]"

It states inner not outer track rod end. Play on the rack

Nice spot Koss, when mine had a similar issue, they wrote it down as steering rack and not track rod, hence my statement.. but if it is the ball joint in the rack, then it's a new/recon rack

Tried it on the next year, and it failed :-

The problem with the new mot system is,
on the fail page the reasons are allready typed out in the text box and you just choose one, the explanations are carp.
The log on and log off every 45mins is carp aswell. used to get 10 tests per day now only 8. And 45mins retest :-

inner track rod end would mean the near side one ( left), it may pay you to change both track rod
ends if you are also changing to discs, seems sensible

It should clearly state N/S/F or O/S/F

The way i read it, a bit like inner or outer cv joint

If they found play somewhere, just jack up the car one side at a time and check where it is.

We have alot of bother at work with the mot failure sheets.

It 'automatically' inserts that its a free re-test if the vehicle is left at the test station for repair. Or half fee if the vehicle comes back within 10 working days.

Problem is, we are a goverment authority and only do the tests, not repairs. So the customers say this is unfair, as anywhere else would have fixed it and retested for free.

Its worse if it only fails on a couple of blown bulbs, as it now costs them £25 re-test fee and a couple of 30p bulbs :S

The garage where i take my vehicles always lets me take the vehicle away to repair faults and doesn't
charge a re-test fee ! They can charge if they want to if the vehicle is taken away.
