Hello all,

attached is a recording of my problem - it is faint on the recoding, but obvious when accelerating.

I recently overheated my engine on a hot day, boiled the whole thing dry before I realised. (yes - I have no heat guage)

A day or two later, suddenly there was this tapping sound particularly under acceleration, I reset the tappets, took the rocker cover off and looked for anything untoward - nothing.
There is no mayo in the oil, no oil in the radiator.
I guess it has something to do with the overheating, but perhaps just coincidence.

I would love to hear of any ideas behind the noise before I start pulling stuff apart.

-water pump?
-timing chain?
-rings?

Pretty much a standard '70 mini - 1000 engine with 1 1/2 SU and extractors.

Regards, Nils

check the exhaust is sealing to the head if it got that hot something could have warped

also do a compression check

sometimes air leaks sound like a tapping noise like the exhaust blowing
