Hi, My 998cc mayfair with 85k (engine standard) smells of petrol when driving under acceleration it also when you put your foot down in 4th at 50mph seems to labour but when easing off slightly on the accelerator it picks up !

I have just changed the plugs, air filter, oil filter and cleaned the carb using a couple of quick bursts of carb cleaner and on treatment of redex in a full tank of 97 octane fuel.

Checked visually for any apparent leaks but no joy, suggestions most welcome.

Cheers BM

sounds to me like the float chamber might be sticking or flooding even. has the car had a good setup recently.?

float and needle valve cost about £7 and takes 3minutes to change. and c an transform your car!

**edit 85K!!!! time for rebuild! :D **

when you jam your foot down it might sloshing the petrol in the tank about. Check the breather pipe is there. Could jut be simple.

If the pipe is there then follow the advice of Mr Retro.

on the tank in the boot, theres a pipe that goes from the top of the tank to the boot floor then thro a little hole.

It's a breather thing.

the breather pipe is situated on the fuelk tank, open the boot and look to the top of the fuel tank, there should be a clear <proabbly stained yellow> tube going form the top of tank, then through a small hole in the boot floor and popping out under the car iirc

Just to let you know its the float needle and valve causing the overflow, thanks very much for the help.
