Hello,

I have recently replaced my head gasket on my 93 cooper spi. When it was replaced, it worked fine no worries until the next evening when it wouldn't start but turns over. (was cold at the time it wouldn't start)

I have replaced the sparks, leads, dizzy's cleaned, temperature gauge, new oil and fuel. The fuel pump works and it appears to be a problem with the fuel not reaching. Getting at a bit of a loss and the only other thing i can think of is the fuel filter. wanted to see if anyone else has had any problems with this before I get underneath to change it. Any help would be appreciated.

hmm, have u tried tapping the immobiliser block on the servo?? they are a swine for non starters!! also make sure the heater plate on the bottom of the manifold is working, has the wire to it, if its fallen off or melted the plate mite not be working.

try cranking when the filter is off, is the injector squirting??

As fikus says, check the injector is squirting. The PTC heater however is not required to run the engine cold, just runs a bit baggish. More importantly though, have you checked for a spark?

Yeah we've checked the spark and its good. I'll check to see if the injector is firing, does it squirt staight into the manifold? As for the heater, when we had the manifold off recently, the plug was a bit scorched. If the injector isn't firing whats my next corse of action?

If the injector isn't firing first check it has +12v coming to it. There's only two wires, one is +12v, the other is gnd which is switched by the ECU.

Now I don't know if Rover have a dedicated fuse for the injector but I put one on mine, so if you don't have 12v, look there.

If you do have 12v your injector might be balls.

I personally would be a little bit cowboy-style at this point and wire a test bulb straight across the two pins of the connector, to see if it lights up when cranking. If it does I'd be looking for a replacement injector.

What else have you done or disturbed while changing the head gasket?

How do you know the fuel pump is ok??

Inertia switch tripped??

Plug leads in the right firing order??

All sensors plugged in??

Is there fuel in the tank??

make sure the ECU grounds are in good condition, those are the ones on the cross member below the triangular suport on the left of the engine bay, the ECU hides it slightly.

Make sure the crank sensor is not covered in metal swarf and is connected.

Take the plugs out, clean them off with a brass wire brush and dry them out. With the plugs still out turn the engine over with the coil +ve disconnected and the injector unplugged, do this for about four 15 second bursts. Check the gaps on the plugs refit, check the firing order of the plug leads, make sure everything is correct as it should be and try again.

Okay, well we took off the whole of the manifold when we done the head gasket also replaced the water pump and checked the connections to the temperature sender whilst we were at it (this is also about 6 months old) Have tested the fuel pump by running a wire from the battery to the pump, plus you can hear the whirring noise it makes with the key in the second position. Inertia switch fine, all plugs and sensors in the right place, 10 litres of fresh fuel too. Everything was double checked when we put the car back together on the sunday after putting the head gasket on and she started straight away, took her for a gentle drive into town that day, no problems. Drove her into work and back the next day again she was fine then on the tuesday night my boyfriend couldn't get her to start at all just turning over.

We really are scratching our heads on this one. We gonna take out all the leads to the ecu tomorrow and blow through to make sure they are fine and clear will also try doing your last line with the coil disconnected and see if that makes a difference. I tried her again last night and she's had a brand new battery in her and already it appears to be draining? thank you for your advice
