Hi there,
I have search the forum and does not seem to find any topic on how to repair steering rack bush. My steering bush was gone. The tie rod is in good order. What I need is to replace the steering rack bush. Note that the steering rack is out of the car now.
Car is 1993, Mini Cooper, 1275, manual.
Appreciate your assistance.
Regards.

Complete exchange units are not that expensive, so just as easy to replace the whole lot..

get someone here to buy it and ship it for you. Normally works out cheaper. Or go off to the scrappys and hope for the best.

What part are you wondering about?

I removed my old bushing and made a new one out of Delrin(self lubricating nylon).
And put it back together.

Been working fine.
May not last as long as original but I can make more!!!

Took all the slop out of the steering.

Mine is a LHD Innocenti so the UK rack replacement won't work.

I have dismantle the whole steering rack. The steering box and the bearings are fine. At the end of the steering rack there is a tie rod and this I suppose need a bush so that it is tightly fit. I am thinking of bringing it to a machine shop and machine a teflon bush so that it is tightly fit. What I am woundering is that there is nothing holding the bush in place so that it will not come out when you turn the steering left and right. I am thinking of fitting a circlip at the end of the bush to stop it falling out. Tell me what you think. Is this a good idea?

I suspect what you're after are items 3 & 4 from the picture below... these re not listed as spares so you would probably need to make some up, or find a local to you rack reconditioner.

Mine was slightly different.
And was basically number 4.
There is a phillips screw that is removed from the outside of the rack. You can just see it in the pic above.
This screw is what holds the bushing in place.
I will look and see if I have any pictures.
I also found some info on the web when I did mine so I will see tonight if I have it and will post it up.

Unscrewing the rack end was the only tough part about the job.
So if yours is all apart then you are home free.

I believe my steering rack is different. There is no number 3 and the piece (looks like washer) infront of it. Number 4, i think is the bush and is gone to pieces. There is also no philip screw that can be removed from the outside of the rack. However there is a plastic screw for aligning the rack back to its seat.
I have taken some pictures but did not manage to upload.
