You answered your own question. That's a 45D4. The 41417 number indicates it was used throughout the 1970s on various BL products. There should be another stamped number somewhere on the housing, it will have three or four digits. The last two digits are the year of manufacture and the first digit(s) are the production week.

aha there are some other numbers stamped just around the corner from the rest.
theres an arrow and 2478.
Week 24 of 1978 im guessing!
Ok this makes sense now.
I was told by the archives department at british motor heritage that my engine was about 1980 and out of an allegro, so if the dizzy is original its a 1978.

The engine is an A series then yeah???

Can't tell you that without seeing the engine. Just 'because the dizzy was made in '78 doesn't mean the engine was, parts weren't supplied on a Just-In-Time basis back then. With all the various strikes at plants throughout the industry they couldn't afford to not have stock. A+ engines were in production since sometime in '79 and I think Allegro was available with both types. That dizzy looks like it has an A+ mounting base but would need to see the engine to be definite.

The plot thickens!
I will get some good pics of the engine for you to have a look at, any tell tale signs/parts to photo or just the lot?

A+ blocks have reinforcing ribs on the side with the dizzy mounting, the alternator mounts are moved toward the front of the engine, the dizzy is held by a forked clamp with a single screw rather than a mounting plate with two screws holding it to the block, etc, etc.

There are some other differences, but pictures are best if you're not sure.

Definately a Pre A+ Dizzy (A series), no question! Pre A+ Block 2, A+ had a different clamping system on dizzy, and the head is machined smooth, no A+ casting marks by Thermostat housing

Assuming you have Metro type housing, you will need C-GRH1140 top hose
