Hello all!

I'm changing the suspension on the rear of my car to Hi-Los. Can anyone tell me how to get the rubber cone/doughnut thing off the bigger end of the two and whether or not I need to put it on my new Hi-Los?

Thanks, Ryan :genius:

I Would Imagine That You'd Put The Trumpet Into The Vice And Prise The Doughnut Off With A large Flat Screwdriver Or Pry Bar...

For future reference. On OLD parts that have been stuck together for years prying alone may not work. There are several methods I've heard of to separate these parts. My favorite is as follows: Spray the joint between the cone and trumpet with penetrating oil and leave overnight. The next day, take the trumpet in your hand like you were holding a torch. Go to a large tree and beat the krap out of it until the cone comes off. Childish... maybe, but the image always intrigued me.

lol

Also, is there a special tool needed to remove the front cones and trumpets? I can't seem to see how they come off!

Ryan ;)

The special tool is sold several places or you can make your own if you use quality materials and work with care.

The tool is at:

How do you take the rear rubber cone together with the trumpet out of the rear sub-frame? Mine, although it was loose (rubber cone and trumpet stuck together but loose inside the rear sub-frame) but it is stuck in there.
Appreciate your help.

To get the complete unit out of the rear subframe is a bit tricky sometimes.

Jack the car up, and release the top Damper mount. Pull the radius arm right down. You will need to have the hand brake off for this.

Then the trumpet assy will move out slightly. I found that levering mine out with a crow bar did the trick.

If you dont have the tool for the front, and you need the job doing quick, you can actually take a hammer and chissle to the front trumpets and shatter them. Remove all the pieces, and then separate the cone from the trumpet.

Then wind your front hi-los all the way in, Put the cone on, and it will fit in the gap. Then its a case of un-winding the hi-los to the required ride height.

Hope this helps.

First, remove the rebound buffer from under the top arm before jacking the car off it's wheels and supporting with stands, that puts the least load on the spring. Still a bit dangerous though as there is always some load on the spring so when you shatter it bits will go flying.

How do you take the rear rubber cone together with the trumpet out of the rear sub-frame?

To get the rear assembly out you will have to disengage the knuckle joint, either from the end of the trumpet or from the knuckle cup in the arm. Once you have managed that the rest is easy. The knuckle has to be popped first, you can't get the whole thing out with the knuckle still connected.

whether or not I need to put it on my new Hi-Los?

Yes you need to put the spring on your new Hi-Los. The car will still need springs funnily enough.

The BEST method is to buy a new rubber cone and change it while you have chance because without doubt it will improve the ride and feel of your car !!! And while you have it all apart then replace the knuckle joint as well !

False economy not to !

Couldn't agree more.
Putting it back together again using a trumpet with a new cone is bit more of a challenge though.
