hi, just sent my 1293 clubby for pre-mot check, wheel alignment and tune but it wouldnt pass the hydrocarbon level test, its at 1500 but needs to be 1000-1200. Ive been told that becasue its a rebuilt engine (see my rebuild topic in the complete rebuild section) that it might need bedding in to reduce these levels!? but the garage told me its ignition that causes it... can anyone help me get the levels down!? Engine as follows:

1293 (re-bored)
JE Pistons
Carrillo Con Rods
Piper 256 Scatter CAM
Hif44 1 1/3" Carb with pipercross air filter
lcb manifold
dtm exhaust
(if this helps!)

Thanx

Its probably due to the camshaft. If it passes the CO at idle but not the HC then they should check the HC at a higher revs.

I think they have to check it at idle when in MOT? i read today on the internet this....

'Operating older engines with higher octane numbers does reduce emissions.'

What does anyone think? i then went onto BP website and in selected garages they do Ultimate Unleaded 102! instead of standard 95, designed for race cars as it burns alot cleaner improving performance! maybe this might get me through mot?

Taken from the MOT Testers Manual :

" Note: If a vehicle meets the CO requirement at its normal idling speed but fails the HC check, re-check the HC level at a high idle speed of 2000rpm. If the HC reading is 1200 ppm or less, the vehicle will meet both the CO and HC requirements."
