If yours is the J reg mini in the pic, it should already have one, they were fitted as standard from about 1989...well the important bit which is the metal spacer and O ring was.

Do they work well?

I mean I found that I have a leak there as the rubber has destroyed itself.

Oh thanks didn't know that. You sir are the wealth of all knowledge. Theres only a very small amount of oil around there just thought id sort it when i give it an oil change, so maybe just replacing the outer seal and boot will sort it.

I shall investigate further at the weekend.

One of the standard spacers is Nylon and actually better than the Mini Spares alloy one I find. A new seal will probably cure it. If not you should be able to find the genuine nylon spacer from somewhere like Moss, the alloy one is made by Mini Spares themselves so unlikely to be found anywhere else, if Mini Spares are out of stock they wouldn't be selling them on to other retailers.

When you say it's obvious that the metal bit has failed, you are aware that this peice is not supposed to be oil tight aren't you? It is only there to locate the selector rod properly, preventing it from slopping about radially which is what (coupled with a damaged or missing gaiter) destroys the actual oil seal. Only the oil seal is oil tight, if the rod is still a good fit in the sleeve and the sleeve is still held tight by its O ring then it is working. There will always be some amount of leakage possible between the rod and sleeve, as the rod must be able to slide and rotate through it and hot oil is extremely slippery! The Nylon sleeve can be a tighter fit to the rod because it is self lubricating, a better bearing and more dimensionally stable with temperature but it too will still leak a little if the seal isn't in place.

before minispares made the oil leak kit, the common fix was to use 2 of the original oil seals
