I have been a Classic Mini fan for at least 10 years. I am now ready to buy one. I look around at what is available in the US, and since the introduction of the new Mini, Classic Mini prices have skyrocketed. I looked on MiniWorld and see that in the UK the prices are significantly less. So I'm thinking about importing one to the US. This means that it has to be more than 25yrs old, so I'm looking at a 1981 or older. I also see that many of the companies that commonly import Mini's to the US take newer Minis and put old VIN #s on them. I want to avoid this if possible.

I came here wondering if anyone can point me to a good guide to buying an older mini. Things to look out for and a good explanation of what models were made what years. I want to know what to avoid and what is preferred. Something that tells an approximate price range by year and model, etc. I dont know if such a guide might exist or not, but I figure if anyone does it will be the folks here.

I'm not looking to import cars to the US to sell, I just want a new toy for myself. I know it seems like quite a bit of a hassle to import an old car, but the prices over here are just crazy. This way I can get what I want, probably in better condition and save some money to boot. However I am a bit concerned about buying a car from so far away and that I wont actually get to see it first. If anyone can recommend a good broker or dealer that may help.

Thanks,
LeRoy
