Auto subframe is wider, I think you would need a 1/4 inch thick spacer under the engine mounts each side and obviousley longer bolts to go with them

Yes you can, I got a kit of spacers bolts and mounts from MiniSport a couple of years ago (maybe 3). You also have to drill an extra hole in each side for fittings.

It was £25.00ish +p&p

I think the ERA turbo used an auto subframe as it moves the engine foreward a bit giving a bit more room for the blower... Damned photographic memory is playing up again!!!!

The auto subframe is a bit of a bugger. If you use the original bolt holes and fit spacers the engine will sit higher. You also only need to drill one hole on the nearside as the auto engine mount on that side, the hole centers are 12mm longer.

The ERA may well have used the auto frame to move the engine forward, but this would entail drilling three holes. The reason they used this subframe to move the engine forward is the front rail is offset. The later subframe, circa 92 onwards has this offset front rail and the mount holes 12mm further forward. Its kind of a mix and match with a pre 92 manual frame and an auto frame.

Getting the engine to sit at the same hight as a manual frame, will require drilling all four engine mount holes and spacing correctly. This is a time consuming task to get right. Maybe the auto/ manual mount kit takes this into consideration, I dont know??

Simpler and easier to fit a manual frame, then you know its right. Using the auto frame with spacers and a manual box is comprimise. If you are happy with that, fine.

I am using an auto frame so I can lower the engine a little, as well as making the clutch that little bit easier to gain access. I need room to get the cam cover under a standard bonnet
