I was just dreaming.......

I'm building a Zcars mini Vtec. When I was 20 I alwas wanted a turbo charged car. That's why I'm thinking of putting a turbo on the Vtec when it's all done. ( it has to be on dutch licence number first. No need to take risk at the SVA with the extra power.....)

I started this topic because I can't figure out the best place for the intercooler. The air filter will have a inlet on one side of the car.
On the outside of the car will be a will a litte inlet scoop.....

-Could it be on the side? Or will the distance between the coller and filetr be to long?
-On the roof? With hanging pipes on the each side of the car?
-On top of the engine? How will I get cold air to the cooler?
-At the back of the car? What about the bootlid?
-At the front of the car? Neeeeeeeehhhhhh, distance if far to long!!!!!

Do you guys have any ideas?

Laters!

I hear a lot of talk about this lately. I think z-cars put it right on the top of the engine and cool it from the roof or the side windows via ducting. If you want a less radical look, you could mount 1 or 2 intercoolers in front of the rear wheels. Then fabricate some side scoops to fit the rear quarter panels (like subaru bonnet ones), or as I am planning rear box type arches with the vent cut out of the front. This will allow cool air to not only the intercoolers but also to the rear brakes and engine bay.

As far as mounting it in the front, I don't think turbo lag is not going to be the issue. I think where to mount it and where to run the pipes would be the problem. The early mitsubishi evo 1,2,3 had about 8 foot of pipework to the intercooler and it did not have any problems with lag and a nice 280bhp standard. However the evo 4,5,6,7,8,9 Had the engine in reversed and shorter pipes to the intercooler. It suffered terrible lag problems.

Hope this gives you some ideas

Thanks for the advice Koss but your plan may not work in the Vtec conversion. There won't be enough room in front of the back wheels. 'The engine is a bit bigger than the R1........

Maybe redoing the bootlid is another option. Could 0ake a hole in the lid and place it there. But will that be effective? What does the wind do behind the car? Maybe it will just suck hot air from the engine to it due to the draft.....?????

Think I can dream about but will just have to wait untill I have the frame.....

No excuse to fantasize about it!!!!!

i thought about this problem for awhile too. here in the US theres a company XS enginnering that has a turbo kit for the toyota mr2 or mrs and the intercooler is placed behind the engine under the muffler and the air is ducted from under the car. they say it works really well even in the hot california weather. I am currently building a inlet maifold with built in laminova air to water cores and running a heat exchanger up front with the radiator.

Hi, Im useing the mr2 quarter panel vent grills to get air to oil cooler & air filter. could also be used for intercooler. then can be mounted in rear along inside. venting is no big deal cause your going to have to figure that anyway. I plan to modify boot lid to exit traped air & heat. Also this puts my intake down & away to lessen noise..Just my 2 pennies RichMk1

I have given this some thought of late and come up with some ideas.

If you are going to use some serious levels of boost and worried about detonation problems. You may consider water H2o injection,
This can be done with a aqua mister, or you could make your own.
Quite simple to make, They consist of a sealed water tank witch is pressurised from the inlet plenum.
Connected to the bottom of the tank is a small tube to a spray nozzle. So under boost it forces the water spray from the nozzle. It is also better to spray direct into the turbo for a even mix. You will also need a solenoid valve connected to your pressure sensor to shut off the water when not at boost.

You wouldn't need an intercooler this way and your car could run some high boost without engine damage.

Just a thought and they don't use lots of water only mist.

chargecooler!!!!! run the chargecooler rad in the front. with the increased run on the water pipes it'll work even more efficently. also withmore room up front the header tank could be drastically increased in size.
