Hello all

First things first.

Ive changed the engine in my mini, and in the process gone from verto to a pre verto setup.

Now i have an interia starter. How can i wire this up?

So far .....ive stuck the solenoid onto the clutch housing case, put all the wires from the old starter (solenoid on top type) to the outer most side on the wing type solenoid. Then ive taken the thick cable from the other side to the start itself.

Now, when i went into the car i got no dash lights and no action on turn of the key. Please note i have not wired in coil, dizzy or alternator yet.
If i short the solenoid across the top, the starter spins.

Any ideas? Engine earth is good.

A diagram would be excellent for this, i dont know the colour of the wires because my car is 25miles away from me.

====================================================

Coil.

What connections go where? Ive got a white wire? white n black? and a white/possible faint pink? coming from the loom.

The coil says for use with contact breaker ign system without ballast. Will this be ok with my electronic magnetic dizzy or should i be looking for another?

====================================================

Dizzy

Got a white and black and a white wire, where do these go on the coil?

====================================================

Any help, much appricated.

im doing the opposite to this and fitting a 1275 metro engine with pre engaged starter to what was an engine bay with a seperate starter solenoid and i dont know where to start.

Its a shame you cant just use the inertia starter with the verto clutch!!

I think the interia to pre-engaged is more widly covered, then going the other way. I'll see if i can dig out a post.

Try fitting all the wires to the side with the main battery feed, and the single wire for the starter motor on the switched side - that'll get you your power

For the dizzy, one will go to the negative side of the coil, and the other will goto the positive. I cant remember which way round they go, but you cant hurt it if you put them on the wrong way round, so just suck it and see really. you'll also need to get yourself an electronic ignition coil - you'll only end up possibly frying the coil if you use the one you've got ATM.

And as for the wiring, from memory, that wire you've got is a ballast wire - which isn't what you need. Take a direct feed from an ignition live (theres no fuse on standard wiring looms for the coil)

that should sort you out mate

thanks ive sorted all this today.

Havent run it yet, so will see if it goes or not before sticking a 12v feed to coil.

Couldnt get a new electronic coil locally, so will have to suck it and see for now :angel:
