Hi Guys

I have a honet speedo which i would like to put in my mini, but having just taken out the old two dial set i have noticed that the connection to the speedo is different to the one on the hornet.

The hornet one has a thread on it and infact it has two threads on it but i am presuming that one is for the mile trip, does anyone know if i can fit it and replace the cable so it runs both the speedo and the mile trip.

Thank Andy

I haven't worked on a Hornet or Elf speedo. However, on Smiths speedometers with trip meters, the trip is not driven externally. The same internal worm gear that drives the odometer drives the trip odometer. The second threaded cable connection on the back is for the reset cable.

You'll need a standard Mini speedo cable with the M12x1 nut on the end to drive the speedometer. I think most Hornet/Elfs used the speedometer set up for the 3.44 final drive. You should see the number "1280" somewhere on the face (assuming its calibrated in MPH). That's the number of turns per mile the gauge expects from the cable. You'll have to determine if your car delivers something close to that. If the number isn't 1280... whatever number you find is STILL the turns/mile and you'll have to insure that it's compatible with your gearbox/tires.

As for the trip reset cable, you'll need to go to a breakers yard and find something close. A number of Triumph models from the 1960s probably have a cable that will fit.
