Someone did it on here with a die grinder.

reccomended? no
theres too high a chance of getting swarf inbetween the pistons and the bores, or getting swarf in the oilways to make it even really worth considering

I can't honestly see your engine lasting long with only a very small amount of that swarf in it as the clearances in the oil pump and bearings are very small !!!!

Bill USN-1 - do you really think you did enough there to prevent swarf getting into your engine ???

???enough???
What's enough?
I Used heavy oil around the top of the piston.
Packed the cylinders with paper towels.
Taped of the entire top of the block except where I was grinding.
Then when done I vacuumed out the cylinders and then used compressed air around the top of the pistons.
Then I wiped the cylinders down.
So is that enough?
I'm not real sure about your oil pump and clearance concern with swarf?
How is it going to get past 2 compression rings and the 3 piece oil ring to get into the crankcase?
But if I was to do it again...
I would set the head on the block without the springs on the valves over the deck.
I would use some grease on the valve face and then drop it down on the block to mark exactly where contact would occur.
This way you can minimize the amount of material you remove!!
Do not go deeper then the wear line(dark line) in the cylinder or you will create blowby due to the compression leaking past the top ring.

I think its because in that pic theres just some paper down the bottom of the bore, looks like thats all you did. think thats what minislapper was getting at.

As for the swarf getting to the pump??? it would have to be small enough topass through the screen in the sump, and if it did, its not going to bother the pump, there is other C**p in the engine and that doesnt 'damage' the pump.

although i would be concerned with the swarf, i would be considerably more concerned with the "grit" from the grinding wheel.
What grinding wheel?
I used a HSS-high speed steel bit in a die grinder.
Unless the bit breaks, there is nothing that comes off.
