Hello

I was wondering how you remove the main double roller bearing from the casing, do you use a special tool or one you have made yourself?

I use the special 'horse shoe' tool...

can make them yourself either from the end of a old large open ended spanner... or a load of old 'c' washers (as used to hold the primary gear on) taped together.. or made in the lathe/mill from hard nylon or steel...

You can knock them out with a punch/drift too - but tis a bit of a game..

I was going to try the 'C' washers but I cant get hold of any. I had not thought of the old spanner that is a good idea.

I am currently grinding a slot in a first gear to try, that but it is taking more patience than I have at the moment. It maybe a trip to B&Q to see if they have something suitable.

see if you can find a chunk of hard nylon - the stuff like the solid subframe mounts as its easier to turn into a horseshoe shape!!

or the local carboot / market where you can get a cheap large open ended spanner to chop up

Weld an old final drive pinion nut onto a piece of tube and then weld that to a nut that fits on the end of a slide hammer.

Works for the first motion shaft too.

Without trying to sound too daft, its ok with the slidehammer on the pinion end, but to me there isnt enough clearance on the diameter of 1st gear to clear the bearing housing.

Well I use something a lot simpler

Get a piece of hardboard/MDF and a hole cutter and cut out a few doughnut shaped sections then cut a 'bite' out..

correct - the slide hammer route works fine - but you still need *something* in there so that 1st doest catch against the web.

Yep - a horseshoe shaped piece of wood would work too...
