I've had a problem for a while with my starter barely turning the engine over... if i rolled the car foreward and let the clutch up whilst turning the starter it would fire straight away. I tried up an uprated battery and tried 2 batteries... which worked for a while.... ive canged the engine earth and battery earth straps... i took the battery round the front and connected it straight to the solenoid and earths with jump leads and got the same symptoms (it would start with 2 batterys or 1 with a jump starter on it.....) I have a 1380 with stage four head and was wondering if compression was hindering the starter turning... i changed the oil and filter too.

I got a new started from a scrap yard, fitted it, connected it and it doesn't even click!!!!!! i've had the car on charge and ive tried rocking it in gear to free it up. Is there anything i can try?? can i recondition the one i took off??? i'm a bit miffed!!!!!

Have you tested the new starter off the car? As it's from a scrappy I'm assuming it's not actually 'new'? If you test that and it's faulty, then find a new one that works. If it does work then it doesn't sound like you have a problem with your starter, though I'm not sure what else that would leave. minidaves has some starters I believe, I had one off him and it was cheap as chips.

How fast will the starter turn it with the normal battery arrangement and the plugs removed (and ignition disabled safely)? Try adding one plug at a time to see if it makes a difference but it shouldn't make that much really.

Right... i took the old starter indoors and gave it the once over, spins freely in one direction and has resistance in the other, gave it a good clean out and regreased the main shafty bit.

I took the "new" one off and put the old one back on.. the one i have from the scrappy doesnt move in either direction so i'll be taking it back to get my refund on monday!!!

The starter turns over a bit better than it did, though i've had the battery on chatge for 24hours.... turns over fine with spark plugs out.

i work with starters all day, does the gear on the pinion move round on its own in 1 direction and in the other it should move the shaft?

inside of the starter will be bush's when these are damaged they can become tight slowing the rate of the starter down aldo if theres bad conections ontie inside on the armature then it would slow, anyway of taking the sol' of the slow one and putting it onto the non clicker? (i havent worked on mini starters by the way so kinda unsure of the construction

the non starter doesn't make any noise (not even a click) and the shaft and gear don't move at all in either direction...

right ok, anyway of taking the solonoid from the one good one(slow one) and putting it into the other one which you got from the scrappy? the solonoid could be burnt out, or the contacts on the inside broken

ive cleaned them all off and double checked.... even doubled the battery neg cable just in case!!!

the starter just seems to have too much work to do, if i slacken one spark plug it goes, also if i push it gently foreward and drop the clutch whilst pressing the start button it spins really quick and starts every time... just not very convenient to do it every time i go out.

compression test? if its fine with no plugs, then it would apear to be leading in that kinda direction!
