I connected my front indicators & (sealed beam) headlights up today, as I stripped my mini some time ago for some bodywork/respray. I haven't yet connected up the rear lights but I decided to try the lights once the headlights were back in just to make sure they work OK...

The sidelights work fine on both sides...and so did the dipped beam, except the drivers side was visibly filling up with smoke! I switched them off, checked connections and tried again but the same thing happened and then the dip beam on the drivers side disappeared. Main beam works on both sides but the same smoky problem with the drivers side light.

It's possible the drivers side light is (was) on brighter than the other side, but due to a lack of space it was quite hard to tell for sure. But it does seem like it's burnt out. What could cause this?? I wired both sides up the same. I assumed that not having connected the rear lights shouldn't matter, am I wrong?

I think I have another sealed beam somewhere, but I'm a bit dubious to connect it up until I know what might have caused this...

Switch the bulbs over, see if happens with that one bulb or not.

Ok really? I'd not heard of it before. Also the unit worked ok before...but that said I took it off in August so maybe just one of those things! Thanks!

Just to confirm, the sealed beam unit was indeed to blame. Thanks for the help :D
