Hi guys and gals,

Im in need of some help, im not very mechnically minded and so simply need to find out what size my minis engine is! 99% of me says a 1275 altho originally a 998cc mayfair. Whats the simplest way to find out, all i can offer at the moment is that on the block are the letter WEM 1024??

A mate said a while ago that 1275 were orignally painted red! Which mine is and was when i bought it 2 and a bit years ago. Its all insured and mot'd as a 1275 just once docment referes to it as still being 998

Many thanks

Rich

Several ways really, although I find the best way is to look at the orientation of the thermostat housing. If the top hose to the radiator is shaped like a ' ? ' without the dot and inverted, then its a 1275. If it is shaped like a ' r ' then its a 998. Actually, this will tell you what cylinder head it has, but there's not so many 998 engines out there with 1275 cylinder heads on, so 99% of the time this will be correct.

Another way is to look at the back of the block underneath the carburretor and see if it has removable tappet chest covers (two large black plates about 4"x2" with a bolt in the middle). If it has, and its an A+ engine, then its a 998. If it hasn't and its an A+ then its a 1275. If its an A series then you start getting into whether its a Cooper 'S' block but again this is unlikely and chances are yours will be a 1275.

Next best way is to look for the engine number, which is underneath the thermostat housing on the block upper face. Its a small steel plate about 2" long with 12 characters stamped onto it. Sometimes if the block face has been skimmed for any reason then these are missing, but if its unmodified it'll be there. 998's are identified by the first two digits of the number being '99' , and then 1275's by the two digits being '12' - pretty simple, but only possible if the plate is still there and still legible.

There are other ways to tell but those three should sort you out.

Well.....best way to see what engine size you have is...

...take the head off and measure the bores.

The number of core plugs above the transfer case is the biggest clue... 2 - big bore, 1 - small bore.... ONLY exception to this is a genuine cooper S engine which will have 1 core plug, but you will know if you have one of them engines.
