Never sleep with the engine on the first date.

Or...

Have a look here:
http://www.heritage-...cate_index.html
I think she has her wires crossed slightly, if the car (not engine) was built before 01/01/73 then it will be eligible for historic (and hence tax free) status. The heritage certificate will give you the official build date.

Date of first registration is then irrelevant however I don't think many cars will have sat around for the 10 month gap you friend has got. A couple of months maybe but Nov is well past the build date cut off.

yeh thats what i told her but she say's the dvla told her otherwise so im checking it out for her
she said the dvla said that the engine may have been build and stockpilled!!! before been fitted to the car
and if she could proof this it would be ok for a exemption!!!

ive never heard that one before
if its true which i dont think it is they'll get a few more 73 cars applying wont they

The person at the DVLA, unfortunately is talking out of their ar*e

It's the built date of the COMPLETE car which is the important bit, ie the day it rolled off the production line... I suspect quite a lot of the components could have been made months, if not years before hand..

The ONLY way to get the build date is via Heritage.
