Hi All,

My mini is going for it's MoT tomorrow and all is looking well apart from a problem with the ball joints. I removed the driveshafts and hub units from the car so that I could dismantle the joints because I could not get any grease into the joints with my grease gun even though there was a bit of play in there. The grease would just leak out from between the nipple and the grease gun nozzle. When I removed the joints I found that the nipples were clear and grease then went through them very easily. I take it that many mini owners have the same problem as me in that they set up the ball joint play off the car but when they put it all back together with the wheel on they find that there is play in them. This is what I have found - and I still can't get grease in. Perhaps I need to jack up the hub when greasing the top joint and then jack up the car when doing the lowers!! Is that right?

How much play is acceptable for the MoT?

I'm sorry to bore you with a topic that has been covered a thousand times - I have done various searches - but any pointers would be appreciated.

Spud.

there shouldn't be any play in the hub ball joints for the mot.

if you have play though it is easy to remove, all you have to do is remove a shim, if though you have removed all the shims and you still have play, you will need to replace the balljoint.

you will need an 1 1/2 inch socket to this job, but i have managed it with a spanner..
