Well its all back together and im very happy!! :ermm:

I had to adjust all the valve clearances as there wasn't any clearance and adjust the accelerator cable a few times (first time too slack so got about 30% throttle-great for economy! and second time too tight).....anyway, now:
  • It starts on the button, hardly any choke and no accelerator needed
  • Idles very smoothly
  • Revs freely and seemingly (rev counter not working) higher and generally feels a lot more quicker and responsive!
The only downside is that it now runs on rather a lot after turning the engine off, it didnt do this before. Anyone any ideas? I'm thinking possibly that there could be a bit of wire wool on one of the piston tops igniting the unburnt fuel? Agree/disagree? If this is the case, how concerned should i be? Or will it just turn to carbon after not too long?

Running on indicates a rich mixture, also a coked up head, but if you've de-coked it anyway, that leaves mixture.

Is the choke adjusted correctly.. other than that, try adjusting the mixture ever so slightly to lean it out a bit.

With the choke off the choke lever doesnt touch the fast idle screw so thats ok.

Just got back from football in the mini and it wasn't running right and was thinking its just too rich. My assumption is that as the valve clearances were reducing, previous owners were compensating by turning up the mixture so im going to manually adjust before RR....it would also account for the >5% CO at MOT recently i guess :ermm:

Not needing too much choke to start when cold and running on are fair indicators of it being too rich. Are the plugs black?

You will probably need to readjust the tappets after a few hundred miles.

I should have bought the Colortune down at the same time!!
