my new engine has now done about 80 miles since being built. however this evening it appears to have developed a rattle. it disappears as soon as i press the clutch. the idler and primary gears were both shimmed to the correct float and the release bearing was new. any thoughts?

I can hear it from here and it sounds like the idler gear.

can be the lash in the drop gears.
what you set the end float of the idler to?
also - what cam have you got fitted? - as if the idle is lumpy it can make the drops 'chatter'....

I have the same prob on mine - it is a new 1380 with a 276 cam and has a fairly lumpy idle. It used to rattle from somewhere under the clutch cover untill you pressed the cluthc pedal in.
I took it back to the company that built it and they said something about the drop gears and raising the idle speed to overcome it - they then raised the idle speed to about 1100 - 1200 rpm and it has made the rattle a lot less noticable, although it is still there slightly. The garage didn't seem to think it was a problem though.

You should not get 'chatter' from helical drops, if you have old SC drops then possibly, as even modern SC drops are machined to reduce the effect.
maybe worth dropping the oil and looking for any significant metal deposits

cant remember what the clearance on the idler is. it was exactly what med said to set it at. they are sc drops and i have since been told by a few people that it is fairly normal with sc drops. it is a 1380 with 286 cam and med ultra light flywheel/back plate with wedged x drilled crank etc, etc. have checked the oil and it is fine.

hi,
mine does the same.
i found it to be my dashboard rattling, when the clutch is pressed my foot rests on the heater console and stops the vibrations.
tighten the dash up n c how it goes
CHEERS!
