
Shipping Mini to USA

I might be emigrating to the USA in the next 2 months....but I dont know yet. Has anyone on shipped a mini to the USA, or know anyone who has?
I would prefer air freight, so am looking for companies who might do this and know how much it would cost (I expect in the thousands of pounds)
Anyone any thoughts on this, and the pros or cons to air freight as opposed to sea freight? I am thinking of taking my Mk1 Cooper over there. As siad, I don't know for sure if I am going, just curious to find out about shippoing really.

i presently work for an airfreight company and seriously you would be better off with sea freight.
i shall be starting my new job at APL shipping on 2nd april and we specailise in the USA if you want to pm me then i could probably sort something

Be cheaper then as no space is wasted.
Or phone DHL, they deliver anything bloody anywere....for a price.

I'm actually still waiting a reply with an offer from a company in the USA (I'm an automotive CAD Designer).
If all goes ahead, I will ship my mini probably October this year (It will stay here for 6 months).
Obviously, Sea freight takes far longer, but is there a danger the car would seize up, salt air causing problems etc? I really want to keep my Mk1 Cooper as new on the other side of the atlantic!!
If there is a likelihood of a problem, I would pay the extra foe air freight, whatever the cost.

seafreight whislt slower is the prefered method for transporting cars to the states. Airfreight in to the good ol'US of A is incredibly difficult to get a whole car through as the want to know the ins and outs of a ducks rectal cavity.
as you have time to wait i will be able to sort this for you.
I have done some rates for the stig based on whole containers door to door but he had some problems so they haven't worked out as yet.
you dont need to worry about sea salt etc affecting your car as its gonna be in a sealed container. also seafreight to usa on average is 11 days port to port. so not bad.
if you have more questions i'll be happy to answer them for you.

Thanks for your help. I had my telephone interview today, so hopefully I will have a job to go to and my H1 Visa sorted etc.
As for the car, I thought sea freight took months!!! I must be dumb! I hope that registerig it in the States and getting it through emmisions will be OK. Its passes MOT's here with flying colours, but I dont know how it would fair out in the USA for their emmissions guidelines.
If all goes well, I will return to the UK every 6 months, getting loads of spare parts from Minispares and bringing them back..heehee!

You will find that most states do not require emmisions on vehicles over 25years old.
They may do a visual or they may just do a tailpipe sniff.
But most are just safety inspections and no where to the level of MOT.
Also look into antique or classic car tags. Limit your mileage you report for insurance to about 1,000 a year.
A lot of states have classic(20yrs) and antique(25yrs) exemtions on emissions and you pay a very small registration and tag fee!!!

Phone a shipping company's and see if you can get in on a half full container.

John, if you are only coming over for six months I'm a bit concerned that bringing your car here will be both a financial drain and stressful. Feel free to PM me or email me off the board. I can give you another contact who can help you with all the paperwork and shipping. Of course... he usually does this as part of a sale so I'm sure there will be costs involved for him acting as your agent and/or Customs broker.

Dk he says that the car will stay in the uk for 6 months and then ship it over to the USA.

and takes 2 weeks from felixsatow (spelling) to newark new york
as for salt air the cars are in locked containers and so far have not had any problems or damage
you can also do the roll on roll of ferry is about £750 depending on who you book it thought takes the same amount of time but you can not put anything at all in the car
where as in a container you could put stuff in the car to ship over as well
