I have a 1380, i dont know what a dizzy is what it does or what one i have but have been told to get a perfmance one! as it can help the engines over all performance. i use the engine for drag racing and just have a normal one non electric,

full name - distributor, it rotates and distributs the spark to each spark plug in your engine 1 at a time, internally some have a square cam the opens and closes a little switch to make the spark (points) others do it electronically (mg metro).

a note on timing - the spark has to occur in an engine at a very specific point for maximum efficiency, this point alters as the engine speed and load changes. there are springs and weights inside the dizzt that move as the engine gets faster and alter the timing making it happen sooner as the engine speed rises.
some (most standard minis) dizzys also have a vacuum unit that alters the timing depending on manifold pressure(throttle position), this can help your engines response power and economy at part throttle

any dizzy can be setup to give u maximum power at full throttle, how well your engine will run at any other speed, if at all, depends on how close the springs and weights are setup to the engiens requirments. standard dizzys barely make the requirents for standard engines so its always worth looking at an upgraded dizzy of some sort weather u di it with an ecu or jsut get your one setup by a garage on your rolling road!

i hope i havent baffled you with that but it shud enlighten you enuf for a basic understanding
